Is Genesis Just a Fancy Hyundai?
Corporately, yes: Genesis belongs to the same parent as Hyundai. As a product, no: Hyundai’s 2015 release described Genesis as a stand-alone brand with its own models and a separate naming scheme, and it planned six new Genesis models by 2020. The name started as a single Hyundai sedan, the Hyundai Genesis, and in 2015 became a brand. The first car under the new brand was the G90 large luxury sedan, unveiled on December 9, 2015.
The honest way to put it is that Genesis shares a parent, and probably some engineering resources, with Hyundai, but is sold and badged as its own brand. We could not find an official statement listing which parts are shared, so we do not claim specific shared components.
Where Are Genesis Cars Manufactured?

Correction to older versions of this page: we previously said the Electrified GV70 and the standard GV70 were both being built in Alabama. HMMA’s own fact sheet shows the Electrified GV70 ended there in May 2025, and that the gasoline GV70 started in May 2023, not 2024.
There is a second update. In August 2026 press coverage of an interview with Genesis chief operating officer Ted Mengiste reported that the GV70 is being moved out of Montgomery and back to Ulsan, South Korea, because Hyundai needed the Alabama capacity for its own models, and that the shift was described as temporary. We could not find a Hyundai or HMMA release confirming it, so treat it as reported, not confirmed. If the plant matters to you, read the final assembly point on the window sticker of the exact car, because a given model year can come from either place.
For the other Genesis models, including the G70, G80, G90 and GV80, we could not read an official plant list this session, so we do not name the plant for each. The Genesis GV90 flagship was unveiled in San Francisco on August 19, 2026, and Genesis’s press release did not state where it will be built. Genesis History: From a Hyundai Sedan to Its Own Brand
The sequence matters, because it explains why people search who makes the Genesis. Genesis began as a model name on a Hyundai sedan. On November 4, 2015, in Seoul, Hyundai Motor announced Genesis as a global luxury brand, with then Vice Chairman Euisun Chung presenting it. The release said Genesis would first target Korea, China, North America and the Middle East, with Europe and other parts of Asia to follow as the range grew. Hyundai planned six new models by 2020. The G90 followed on December 9, 2015.

The old version of this page quoted a G90 price of around $80,000. The current listing on genesis.com is $92,700 for the 2026 model, so that figure was out of date. The GV90, a fully electric flagship SUV, is shown on the site as an upcoming 2028 model with no price. Genesis’s press release gives a 123.5 kWh battery, 490 kW combined output and an estimated range of about 500 km for the seven seat version, based on its own internal tests.
