GM describes Factory ZERO as its first fully dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant and lists 1985 as the year opened. GM’s July 2026 list adds that the location has housed an automotive production facility since 1914. The same list carries a fine-print line that matters for any plant list: vehicles are assembled with US and globally sourced parts, so “made in Detroit” describes final assembly, not every component.
Stellantis lists Jefferson as built in 1991, with the first Jeep Grand Cherokee produced there in January 1992. Mack is the newer site: the fact sheet says construction began in the second quarter of 2019 on what it calls the first new assembly plant in the city in nearly 30 years, and production of the Grand Cherokee L launched in March 2021.

One correction is worth flagging because older articles repeat it: some lists place the Chevrolet Bolt at Orion Assembly in Lake Orion. GM’s July 28, 2026 list of operating US assembly plants does not include Orion at all, and its undated facilities page says only that Orion “is being transitioned” to produce the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra Denali EV. We could not confirm from those pages what Orion is building today, so we do not list it as a current source of any model.
Jeep and Dodge in Detroit: Jefferson vs Mack
Search data for this page includes people looking for the Jeep plant in Detroit, and the two Stellantis sites are easy to confuse. Both sit in the city and both carry the Detroit Assembly Complex name, but their product lists differ.

Two details stand out. First, the Mack sheet says the Grand Cherokee 4xe was phased out for the 2026 model year, while the Jefferson sheet records the 4xe starting there in March 2023, so the plug-in hybrid story needs a date on it. Second, the Jefferson sheet says $130 million was announced on Oct. 14, 2025 to prepare for the next-generation Durango. It does not give a launch date, so we do not state one.
Do They Still Make Cars in Detroit?
Yes. Three plants listed by GM and Stellantis have Detroit addresses today, and GM’s July 2026 list includes Factory ZERO among its operating US assembly plants. What has changed over time is the mix: the Stellantis fact sheets show new investment aimed at specific models, and the GM page shows an all-electric plant. Anything beyond that, such as how many vehicles each plant builds in a year, is not stated on the pages we read, so we leave it out.
The corporate side is also in the city. GM’s facilities page says Hudson’s Detroit at 1240 Woodward Avenue is its global headquarters, opened in 2026. That is an office, not an assembly plant, which is why headquarters and assembly plants should never be counted as the same thing when someone says a company is “in Detroit.”
