What cars qualify for Uber? In the US, Uber’s own vehicle requirements page asks for a 4-door vehicle in good condition with no cosmetic damage and no commercial branding, and UberX adds 5 factory-installed seats and seat belts, working windows and air conditioning. UberXL needs 7 seats. Comfort, Comfort Electric and Green layer extra conditions on top. The exact model-year cutoff and any inspection depend on your city.

Most “what cars qualify” pages give you one blended list. Uber does not work that way: each product (UberX, UberXL, Comfort, Comfort Electric, Green, Pet) has its own conditions, and some are set by city. Below is each product’s rule, the source it came from and the date we read it, so you can see which rules are Uber’s and which vary by market. Everything here is as of October 12, 2026, and Uber says its requirements can change without notice.

What Cars Qualify for Uber? The Baseline Rules for Every Product

Uber’s US vehicle requirements page lists the same baseline for the options it covers (UberX, UberXL and Comfort):

• A 4-door vehicle. UberX adds that the passenger doors must open independently.
• Good condition with no cosmetic damage.
• No commercial branding. Taxis, government cars and other marked vehicles are excluded.
• Registration: official or temporary documents are accepted, and the car does not have to be registered in your name.
• Insurance: you carry your own policy under state and local law, and Uber says it maintains liability coverage for US partners.

This table pulls each product’s published conditions from the Uber pages we read on October 12, 2026. A missing detail means we found no extra rule on that page, not that none exists in your city.

UberX: The Everyday Standard

UberX is the product most cars are tested against. The US requirements page asks for a 4-door vehicle whose passenger doors open independently, 5 factory-installed seats with seat belts, working windows and air conditioning. It excludes vans, box trucks and similar vehicles, taxis, government cars and other marked vehicles, salvaged or rebuilt vehicles, and any car with aftermarket seating such as installed seats, extra seat belts or BedRyder systems.

Two details trip people up. First, five factory-installed seats means a bench seat that came from the maker, not one added later. Second, a two-door car is out regardless of how many seats it has: our post on driving Uber with a 2-door car covers that case. Uber’s page does not list example models for UberX, so we do not either.

UberXL and UberXXL: Seats and Cargo Space

UberXL uses the UberX conditions but with 7 factory-installed seats and seat belts. Uber’s help page words it as seats and belts for a driver and 6 passengers, and it also sets a licensing-experience rule: at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US, or three years if you are under 25.

UberXXL is a separate category. Uber’s help page ties it to trunk space (more than 27 cubic feet behind the third row) and publishes a list of 18 eligible models, so the answer there is a model list, not a seat count. If your vehicle has seven seats but little room behind the third row, it can qualify for XL and still miss XXL.

Uber Comfort and Comfort Electric

Comfort is where the vehicle and the driver both matter. Uber requires a vehicle with more legroom than the compact cars eligible for UberX that also meets the minimum vehicle year, a 4.85 star rating, and at least 100 completed trips. You must also stay eligible on another product, such as UberX or UberXL. The page does not give a legroom measurement or a model-year number, and a city page we read (New Orleans) says only that Comfort “meets the minimum vehicle year requirement”. Any article quoting a single Comfort cutoff year for every city is going beyond what Uber published.

Comfort Electric is stricter on the car. Uber’s page says the vehicle “must be fully battery electric (not a hybrid)” with a model year no older than 8 years, and names Tesla Model 3, Mustang Mach-E and Polestar as examples. It lists the same 4.85 rating and 100 trips. The page also states that hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are not eligible for the Go Electric incentive tied to it.

Uber Green: Electric or Hybrid, Depending on the Market

Green is the least standardized product. In a June 8, 2023 post, Uber said that in some markets a Green request is matched to a hybrid or electric vehicle, and in others Green is 100% electric. It described “green” vehicles as primarily battery-electric vehicles and hybrids, including plug-in hybrids. We did not find a current US-wide Green list from Uber, so that post is the most specific Uber source we could read and it is more than three years old. Treat it as a direction, not a rule, and confirm your vehicle in the Uber driver app.

Uber’s Comfort Electric page also treats Green as its own trip type, noting that drivers online can receive UberX, Green or Comfort trips. In practice an electric car or hybrid is the common path in many markets, but the app, not an article, decides.

Uber Pet: Same Car, Different Trip Type

Pet does not have its own vehicle standard on the help article we read. It says Pet rides “work similarly to UberX rides”, and the difference is the animal. Drivers opt in through the trip preferences in the app, riders may bring one pet, and service animals are not Pet rides: Uber says service animals can accompany riders at all times without extra charge, and local and federal law may also require you to accept them.

Inspections and City Differences

Inspection is not on every Uber page. The US requirements page and the Chicago page we read do not mention one, while the New Orleans page says Louisiana regulations require drivers to maintain a valid state-level vehicle inspection for UberX, UberXL and Comfort, with a photo of the inspection sticker or an approved document. So the question “does my car need an inspection?” depends on where you drive. Check your own city’s Uber vehicle requirements page rather than assuming.

City pages also reset the numbers. Chicago’s page, for example, lists 7-year-old or newer for Uber Black and 15 years for the standard products, while New Orleans lists 6 years for Black. How to Check Whether Your Car Qualifies

1. Open Uber’s Eligible Vehicles page and choose your city. Uber says the page is for convenience, and that a vehicle must still meet the requirements page for your area and ride option.
2. Read the model year shown for your vehicle. Uber states that the year listed is the minimum model year for eligibility, so your car must be that year or newer.
3. Check the product you want. UberX needs 5 seats and 4 doors on that page, and UberXL needs 7 seats and 4 doors.
4. Compare against your city’s vehicle requirements page for branding, condition, inspection and any city-specific age limit.
5. Finish sign-up. Uber’s requirements page says vehicle requirements vary by region and that the sign-up flow shows what is needed.

Cars That Are Not Allowed on Uber

From the UberX conditions Uber publishes, these do not qualify:

• Vans, box trucks and similar vehicles.
• Taxi cabs, government cars and other marked vehicles.
• Salvaged or rebuilt vehicles.
• Any vehicle with aftermarket seating modifications (installed seats, seat belts or BedRyder systems).
• Cars with cosmetic damage or commercial branding.
• Cars with fewer than 4 doors.

Uber’s pages do not name specific banned models, so we do not list any. If a model is on the Eligible Vehicles page but fails your city’s requirements, Uber says that vehicle is not eligible in your area.
