Where Is the Fuel Filter Located? What Maker Manuals Say

There is no single answer to where the fuel filter is, because maker documents treat it in different ways. Hyundai’s 2020 Kona owner’s manual calls the fuel filter maintenance free with periodic inspection recommended, and says new fuel filters should be installed by an authorized dealer. The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban manual has no fuel filter item in its maintenance schedule. Mazda’s Mazda6 manual lists the fuel filter as a replacement item at a set distance. This guide shows what those documents say, how a filter maker’s catalog describes the places a filter can sit, and how to work out the answer for your own vehicle.

Fuel Filter Basics

Hyundai’s manual describes what a restricted filter does: it may limit the vehicle driving speed, damage the emission system and cause hard starting, and the filter should be replaced when a considerable amount of foreign substances has accumulated in the fuel tank. Filter makers sell the part in several forms. WIX lists its part 33972 as a plastic universal in-line filter for 5/16-inch lines that can be used with gasoline or diesel, with a nominal rating of 50 microns, a burst pressure of 58 psi and a maximum flow rate of 1 gallon per minute. WIX notes that its parts 33002, 33012 and 33032 are for gasoline only.

The Kona schedule marks the filter for inspection, the Mazda6 schedule marks it for replacement, and the Tahoe and Suburban schedule has no fuel filter row.

Is the Fuel Filter Inside the Fuel Tank? (And Can You Replace It Yourself?)

A filter in the tank is a recognized category. The location key in the WIX filter catalog lists IFT, for In Fuel Tank, and FTA, for Fuel Tank Area, alongside the engine compartment and frame locations. That tells you a tank location exists in the parts catalog. It does not tell you whether your vehicle has one.

The owner’s manual pages quoted in this guide do not state whether the filter in the Kona, the Tahoe and Suburban, or the Mazda6 is in the tank. For the Tahoe and Suburban, the Normal schedule has no fuel filter item. For the Kona, the manual says fuel filters should be installed by an authorized Hyundai dealer, and that after a new filter is installed the engine should be run for several minutes while the connections are checked for leakage.

Safety: this guide gives no steps for opening fuel lines or draining fuel. That is seven engine-compartment codes, nine frame codes and two tank codes. The list names regions, not model-specific positions, so a code in a parts listing tells you which region the catalog places that filter in, and the vehicle’s own manual or a dealer is still the source for the exact spot.

Locating The Fuel Filter By Car Type

The documents quoted here cover gasoline and diesel engines differently, and the intervals show how far apart makers are:

Mazda’s manual shows how much the answer depends on engine and market: the same model has a 60,000 km interval in one table and 135,000 km in another. Use the schedule printed for your own market and engine. WIX also separates fuel types: its plastic 33972 can be used with gasoline or diesel, while its 33002, 33012 and 33032 are gasoline only, so check the fuel type on any filter listing.

Searches for a particular model, such as a Buick Envision, Volkswagen Passat or Hyundai Kona, usually want one exact spot. This guide gives a location only where a maker document names it, and the documents above do not name a spot for those models. Step-by-step Fuel Filter Search

1. Open the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and look for a row named fuel filter. Hyundai’s and Mazda’s schedules have one. The Tahoe and Suburban Normal schedule does not.
2. Read the footnote beside the row. Hyundai’s footnote says the filter is considered maintenance free, that the schedule depends on fuel quality, and that fuel flow restriction, surging, loss of power or hard starting calls for immediate replacement and a visit to an authorized dealer.
3. If the manual names no location, check the parts listing for your engine. A catalog location code such as ECF, FRC, FTA or IFT shows which region applies (see the table above).
4. Stop at the point the document stops. For a filter in or near the tank, Hyundai’s route is an authorized dealer for installation.
5. If you find leakage from fuel lines, hoses or connections, Hyundai’s manual says to have an authorized dealer replace the damaged or leaking parts immediately.

Signs Of A Clogged Fuel Filter

Hyundai’s manual lists the effects of a clogged-up fuel filter: it may limit the vehicle driving speed, damage the emission system and cause hard starting. The maintenance footnote adds fuel flow restriction, surging, loss of power and hard starting as reasons to replace the filter immediately, regardless of the maintenance schedule.

Those symptom words are not exclusive to the filter. GM’s service bulletin 04-06-04-051G lists loss of power, diminished performance, frequent stalls and no starts, along with a noted decrease in fuel economy, as conditions for using its detergent fuel additive. The same bulletin says GM does not endorse fuel injector cleaning as preventive maintenance, and that the only preventive maintenance it currently endorses for gasoline engine fuel systems is adding GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS to a tank of fuel at each oil change. Both documents use the same symptom words for different remedies.

When To Replace The Fuel Filter

The documents give three different answers. Hyundai treats the filter as maintenance free with inspection and replacement when flow is restricted. Mazda prints a replacement distance, such as every 60,000 km (37,500 miles) for most markets on its SKYACTIV-G gasoline engines. GM’s 2020 Tahoe and Suburban schedule prints none, though the Tire Rotation and Required Services Every 12,000 km/7,500 mi list in that manual includes a visual inspection of the fuel system for damage or leaks, and its evaporative control inspection footnote says to visually check all fuel and vapor lines and hoses for proper attachment, connection, routing and condition.

If your manual prints no distance, there is no maker interval to quote for your vehicle. Hyundai’s footnote does tie the filter’s schedule to fuel quality.
