How to Buff Out a Scrape on a Car: Paint Transfer or Scratch?

A scrape on a car can be another object’s paint sitting on top of yours, a scratch in your own clear coat, or damage that has gone down to metal, and buffing only suits the first two. Meguiar’s and Turtle Wax both list paint transfer among the marks their compounds are made for, Turtle Wax warns that a scratch your fingernail catches in may be too deep for its scratch remover, and the Polestar 2 owner’s manual switches to touch-up paint once damage reaches metal. This guide sorts scrapes by depth, walks through what each maker’s directions say for each level, and covers curb scrapes on plastic bumpers.

How to Buff Out a Scrape on a Car: Start With Depth

Best Paint Transfer Pick

Turtle Wax Scratch Repair and Renew car scratch remover bottle

Turtle Wax Scratch Repair & Renew, Car Scratch Remover, 7 oz. (Pack of 2)

  • Best for: Light scuffs and paint transfer marks on glossy paint that a fingernail glides over
  • Why we picked it: The listing names scuffs and paint transfer among the marks it targets, says it can be worked in by hand with a microfiber towel, and showed in stock on Amazon on 2026-10-26 at $21.00 for the two-pack
  • Main drawback: Turtle Wax’s own directions say a scratch that catches your fingernail may be too deep for repair, and the listing is for glossy paint, not matte or satin

Depth decides whether buffing is the right tool, so check it before opening a bottle. The table below lines up each depth with what the maker pages and the Polestar manual read for this guide say. Product directions were read on October 26, 2026 and labels change, so your own bottle comes first.

Depth of the scrape What the makers say Next step according to the source
Paint transfer or scuff on the surface Meguiar’s says its ScratchX removes light scratches, scuffs, blemishes and paint transfer from glossy paint and clear coat surfaces. Turtle Wax says its Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound smooths scratches, swirls and paint transfer marks, and its Renew & Restore Wipes remove paint transfer. Compound or polish by hand, then wax or sealant
Light scratch in the clear coat that a fingernail does not catch on Turtle Wax says to run a fingernail gently over the scratch before using Scratch Repair & Renew; if the scratch is gone after wiping, you are done, and if it is still visible, repeat. Work in the product, wipe off, check, repeat if still visible
Scratch your fingernail catches in Turtle Wax: it may be too deep for repair with Scratch Repair & Renew. For clear-coat damage it sells a separate Hybrid Solutions kit that adds a wipe-on clear coat after a compound step. Step up to the maker’s clear-coat fill kit or touch-up paint
Damage that has not reached the metal Polestar’s manual: if the damage has not reached all the way down to the metal, touch-up paint can go on right after the surface is cleaned. Base coat, then clear coat, per the manual
Damage down to bare metal Polestar’s manual: you may need primer first, and a plastic surface calls for an adhesive primer. Primer, then paint and clear coat
Close-up of peeling blue paint on a metal object with an orange layer showing underneath
Peeling paint close up: where paint has come away, a different layer shows underneath, which is the depth question the fingernail check is meant to answer.

The fingernail test is Turtle Wax’s own: its Scratch Repair & Renew directions say to run a fingernail gently over any scratch that appears moderately deep, and that a scratch which catches the nail may be too deep for repair. That is the dividing line between buffing and everything below it in the table. Buffing Out Paint Scrapes: What Turtle Wax and Meguiar’s Directions Say

Four maker pages describe how to work a product into a scrape: the Turtle Wax Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound page, the Turtle Wax Scratch Repair & Renew page, the Meguiar’s Quik Scratch Eraser Kit page and the Turtle Wax Renew & Restore Wipes page. Each row below is that maker’s own instruction for its own product, not a ranking.

Product (maker page) Marks the page names How the page says to apply it After
Turtle Wax Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound, 10.5 fl oz Scratches, swirls, oxidation and paint transfer Wash and dry; use a clay bar or detailer spray if needed; put a dime-sized amount on a fresh microfiber cloth and buff into the finish; not in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces Wipe off leftovers with a clean microfiber cloth, repeat if needed, then follow with a car wax
Turtle Wax Scratch Repair & Renew, 7 fl oz Light to heavy scratches (the maker’s wording), swirls Wash and dry; fingernail check; dime-size dot on a microfiber towel or polishing pad, worked in a circular pattern with no need to press hard Wipe off, check, repeat if the scratch is still visible; the maker says the formula seals the paint, so no wax is needed on the treated area
Meguiar’s Quik Scratch Eraser Kit (ScratchX, drill-mounted pad) Light scratches, scuffs, blemishes and paint transfer on glossy paint and clear coat Shake the bottle, apply ScratchX to the pad, polish with four to six overlapping passes; the page says medium drill speed and to repeat as needed Remove residue with the towel and follow with a wax such as Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Wax or Ultimate Liquid Wax
Turtle Wax Renew & Restore Wipes Oxidation, paint transfer, light scratches, water spots, swirl marks Wash and towel dry; wear gloves; wipe with a continuous circular or back-and-forth motion and full hand pressure for several minutes, or until the surface appears restored Follow with a Turtle Wax spray, liquid or paste wax

Two details stand out. Meguiar’s states the kit is not for use on matte or satin finishes. And none of the pages gives minutes of work: amounts and passes are stated as a dime-sized dot or four to six overlapping passes, repeated if the mark is still visible. Turtle Wax’s Rubbing Compound page also says not to apply it in direct sunlight or on surfaces that are hot to the touch.

How to Fix a Curb Scrape on a Plastic Bumper

The Polestar 2 (2021) owner’s manual names scratches and damage to the edges of fenders, doors and bumpers among the most common kinds of paint damage and says damage should be rectified immediately to help prevent further damage to the paintwork. It does not describe buffing. Its touch-up procedure is the part that applies to a deep bumper scrape, and it is specific about plastic.

Flaking paint on weathered boards, with bare material showing where the paint has come away.
  • Surface and temperature: the manual says to make sure the surface is clean and dry and that the surface temperature should be at least 15 degrees C (59 degrees F) before touch-up.
  • Materials it lists: primer (a special adhesive primer in a spray can for plastic-covered bumpers), base coat and clear coat as spray cans or a touch-up pen or stick, masking tape and fine-grain sandpaper.
  • If the damage has not reached the metal: touch-up paint can be applied right after cleaning. The manual says to place a strip of masking tape over the damaged surface and pull it off so that loose flakes of paint stick to the tape.
  • If it goes down to bare metal: you may need primer first, and on a plastic surface an adhesive primer should be used for better results.
  • Applying primer: the manual says to spray it into the lid of the can and brush it on thinly, mix it thoroughly, apply with a small brush, toothpick or similar, and when the primer is dry apply one or more coats of paint and then a clear coat, letting the paint dry between each application.
  • Longer scratches: follow the same procedure but first mask off the surrounding area to protect the undamaged paint. The manual adds that light sanding with a very fine-grained sandpaper or similar may be required before painting, for example if there are uneven edges.

This is one manufacturer’s guidance for one model and model year. The manual itself tells owners to contact Polestar Customer Support for touch-up pens, sticks and spray paint, so owners of other makes should check their own manual for that make’s instructions. What to Do When the Scrape Is Too Deep to Buff

Three of the sources point to a different product or procedure for deeper damage.

Source What it says about deeper damage
Turtle Wax, Scratch Repair & Renew page If the scratch catches your fingernail, it may be too deep for repair with that product.
Turtle Wax, Hybrid Solutions Scratch Repair Kit page A premium clarifying compound is rubbed back and forth 30 times on the damaged and surrounding area, the residue is wiped off, then a self-levelling clear coat is wiped on. The page says to allow 24 hours to cure before touching or polishing the repair, that the coating is dry to the touch in 2 hours, and that it can be wiped off within two minutes of application if needed.
Polestar 2 (2021) owner’s manual Touch-up base coat and clear coat if the metal is not exposed; primer first if it is.

The Turtle Wax kit page says its wipe-on clear coat can conceal light scratches, surface defects and road rash. None of the pages read for this guide gives a repair price or says when a panel needs repainting, so for damage deeper than touch-up paint can cover, ask a collision shop for an estimate. For costs, see how much it costs to fix a scrape on a car, and for scratches that are clearly deeper than clear coat, see how to fix deep scratches on a car and how to touch up car scratches.

After Buffing: Wax, Sealant and Matte Paint

Both Turtle Wax’s Rubbing Compound page and Meguiar’s kit page end with a wax step, and both name specific products from their own lines. Turtle Wax says Scratch Repair & Renew is different on this point: its formula includes a sealant, so there is no need to apply car wax to the treated area. If you want the full waxing routine, see how to wax a car.

Meguiar’s says the ScratchX kit is not for matte or satin finishes, so read your own bottle for the same warning. Turtle Wax’s website links a Safety Data Sheets page; read the sheet for your exact product before use.

What This Guide Does Not Cover

  • Repair prices: ask a collision shop for an estimate.
  • Filler, panel repainting or dent repair, which none of the sources read for this guide describe.
  • Make-by-make touch-up procedures: only the Polestar 2 (2021) manual was read; check your own manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buff out a scrape on a car?

It depends on the depth. Meguiar’s says its ScratchX removes light scratches, scuffs, blemishes and paint transfer from glossy paint and clear coat. Turtle Wax says a scratch that catches your fingernail may be too deep for its Scratch Repair & Renew, and the Polestar 2 manual describes touch-up paint, with primer if metal shows, for damage that has gone deeper.

What is the fingernail test for a car scrape?

Turtle Wax’s directions for Scratch Repair & Renew say to run a fingernail gently over any scratch that appears moderately deep. If the scratch catches your nail, the maker says it may be too deep for repair with that product.

Should I wax the car after buffing out a scrape?

Turtle Wax’s Rubbing Compound page says to follow with a car wax, and Meguiar’s says to follow ScratchX with a wax such as Ultimate Quik Wax or Ultimate Liquid Wax. Turtle Wax says Scratch Repair & Renew includes a sealant, so no wax is needed on the treated area.

Can I buff out a scrape on matte or satin paint?

Meguiar’s says its Quik Scratch Eraser Kit is not for use on matte or satin finishes. Check your product label and your owner’s manual before using any compound on those finishes.

Is it okay to buff a scrape in direct sunlight?

Turtle Wax’s Rubbing Compound page says not to apply it in direct sunlight or on surfaces that are hot to the touch. For touch-up paint, the Polestar 2 manual gives a minimum surface temperature of 15 degrees C (59 degrees F).

What if the scrape on my bumper has reached bare metal or plastic?

The Polestar 2 manual says a scrape that goes down to bare metal may need primer first, and that paint damage on a plastic surface calls for an adhesive primer, followed by one or more coats of paint and a clear coat, letting each dry between applications. Your own manual may differ.
