To tell which side you are dealing with, run the wipers once. If the haze moves, it is on the outside and the fix is to stop cooling the glass. If it stays, it is on the inside and the fix is to dry the cabin air and warm the glass, which is what the steps below do.

The Fastest Method: AC + Heat + Fresh Air (Step-by-Step)

Button names and symbols differ from car to car, but the owner’s manuals from Mazda and Kia describe the same recipe. Work through it in order:

1. Start the car and turn the fan on. Kia’s manual says to select any fan speed other than 0, and Mazda says to turn the fan fully up for maximum defrosting.
2. Set the temperature to warm or hot. Mazda says to use the hot or warm position with defrost, and the extreme hot position for maximum defrosting.
3. Select the windshield defrost or defog mode on your climate panel.
4. Check that the A/C is on. Mazda says the A/C gives dehumidified heating, and Kia’s defrost mode selects the A/C automatically. If your car does not, press the button yourself.
5. Check that the air intake is set to outside air. In Mazda’s defrost mode, outside air is selected automatically and cannot be changed to recirculation.
6. Leave the settings alone until the glass is clear, then adjust them.

The A/C step surprises people in winter, because it feels like the wrong direction. How to Fix Fog on the Outside of Your Windshield

Fog on the outside is the one case where running the defroster at full blast is the wrong tool. Try these steps in order:

1. Run the wipers once to clear the film. Outside moisture is the one kind of fog the wipers can reach.
2. If cold A/C air was blowing at the glass, leave the defrost mode and lower the fan speed, as Kia’s manual instructs for extremely humid weather.
3. If you do need defrost mode for the inside, keep the temperature on warm or hot, not cold, as Mazda’s manual instructs.
4. If the view is still poor, slow down, and pull over safely when you can until the glass is clear.

Rear Window and Mirror Defoggers

The rear glass has its own heater, and it does not need the A/C. Mazda’s 2024 CX-30 manual says to start the engine, and the rear window defogger operates and the switch indicator light turns on. It stops automatically after about 15 minutes, and you can press the switch while it is running to stop it earlier.

Nissan’s 2023 Leaf manual describes the same behavior for a switch that heats the rear window and the outside mirrors: the defogger turns off automatically after approximately 15 minutes, and if the window clears sooner, push the switch again to turn it off. It also warns to be careful when cleaning the inner side of the rear window so that the defogger lines are not scratched or damaged.

Anti-Fog Treatments: How to Use Them, and When Not To

Anti-fog treatments coat the inside of the glass so that fog is less likely to form. Rain-X describes its Interior Glass Anti-Fog as a treatment for automotive and marine interior glass and mirrors that reduces interior fogging and removes smoke residue. Its published directions are short:

1. Apply a small amount to a paper towel or 100% cotton cloth, not straight onto the glass.
2. Wipe across the surface to be treated, one section at a time.
3. Do a final wipe with the dry side of the towel to leave a streak-free coating.
4. Re-apply as needed to maintain a fog-free condition.
5. If any haze appears from excess application, sprinkle with water and wipe with a dry cloth or paper towel until clear.

There is one restriction worth knowing. Rain-X’s help center says its Anti-Fog Treatment needs to be used on clear glass without anything else on it, such as tint, and that it cannot be applied to tinted windows. Other brands have their own labels, so read the directions and any warnings on the bottle before you use it. Ice and Snow on the Glass

Defogging only clears moisture. Ice and snow need to be removed, and that is also a legal point in some states. The PennDOT winter driving page says to remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors and all vehicle lights before you drive and as often as needed, and to clear the hood and roof as well.
